Being Your Own Website Administrator

Administrering Your Own WebsiteMany people decide to take a stab at administering their own web site. Most web site owners create their own web site and hire someone else to do the maintenance. On the business end of things, a web site is the same as a store you’d have if you owned a real time business. You would rearrange your merchandise, organize it and put up advertising all over town. Adding things to your website is, in many ways, the same thing only maintaining a website may be more than you want to undertake.

Being your own administrator will involve tasks like fixing bugs, taking care of security, managing the space and just fine tuning it in general. Another big part of maintaining your site is taking care of backing everything up. You’d hate to have something unexpected happen and lose all your data because it wasn’t backed up. It would nice if you could rely on someone else to take care of all these details but you’re talking about a lot of money there. Paying for technical service can become costly. If you’re business is just starting, this may be an expense you’re not ready to handle.

Just consulting fees alone can run from a few dollars to over $100 per hour. When it comes to web site maintenance, you often get what you pay for. Sometimes web hosting companies will provide maintenance as part of their package. Although you may have to pay extra for this service, it can be included. What you pay extra; however, is usually lower than if you hired an independent contractor to do the job. It’s something to consider. Another thing to consider is using a free hosting service, which gives you the opportunity to experiment with administration tasks without paying.

Once you’ve gained a little experience with administration tasks, you may find it’s easier than you thought. The decision as to if you want to do these things yourself will depend on the amount of time you have, your skill level and the complexity of your web site. Administering your own web site is definitely a challenge but also something that will give you a real sense of pride when accomplished.

But still, depending on the complexity of your website, administering it yourself could take a huge deal of technical knowledge. And doing it incorrectly may result in loss of visitors, sales, etc. Running a website is like running any business: keep doing the tasks that you are good at, keep doing the tasks that are the most lucrative and hire or outsource the rest if you can.
