Matt Heaton, CEO of hosting companies Bluehost.com, Hostmonster.com, and Fastdomain.com, occasionally shares the sorts of numbers his customers like to see on his personal blog. The serial entrepreneur has been wildly successful ever since he opened his first computer store at age 21, and in one of his blog posts last week Heaton shared a few interesting statistics.
Like most entrepreneurs, he is sometimes secretive about many of the numbers associated with his privately-held companies, but here are a few enlightening statistics that show just how successful the Provo, Utah company has been. Heaton reports more than 1.9 million domains hosted as of last count, with over 525,000 paying hosting customers. Those are some truly impressive numbers, and for a hosting company to have over half a million customers we’re pretty confident that Matt’s been doing something right.
To accommodate all those web sites, Bluehost has over 850 servers, and he notes that the company is always rotating out older servers-another important bit of information, since having newer equipment is always a vital part of minimizing downtime.
The company has over 240 employees, who handle about 5,000 sales/billing/support requests every single day, with an incredible average hold time for support of just 19 seconds. And when you’re calling into support, you’re calling into their headquarters, not an office halfway around the world-Matt tells us flat out that nothing is ever outsourced. They do it all right there in Provo! Over 800 new customers sign up every day on weekends and over 500 each Saturday and Sunday. And let’s not forget, Bluehost is also a domain registrar, and they add between 50,000 and 70,000 domains every month through sister company Fastdomain Inc. Matt, do you ever take a day off?
As a private company, Matt won’t tell us how much revenue and profits Bluehost takes in, but we would venture to guess that the company has become pretty profitable.
