Google’s Adsense appears to be a dream come true – free money for people visiting your website (and clicking an advertisement while they are there!). However most webmasters will be struggling to really generate proper income with Adsense, so this article is designed to give some tips and pointers on how to increase revenues from Adsense.
The first consideration should be the amount of traffic a website receives. You can use every trick in the book to improve Click Through Rate (CTR) once visitors have reached the site, but if visitor numbers are low to begin with then expect income to be low. The most important way to build traffic is to provide high quality content that people will keep coming back to and will link to. Link farming is no substitute for actual real human interest in your site: make it interesting and make it change nice and regularly!
Now consider where ads are placed. Most website readers’ eyes follow an ‘F’ shape across an average page; that is, the parts of a page most studied are across the top of the page, almost full width, followed by a second horizontal scan underneath. This pattern forms an ‘F’ shape over the page, so placing your adverts here will bring the best results.
There is a fine line between fooling readers into clicking your ads and making your ads blend in. It is commonly accepted that adverts that blend into a website’s overall design are more productive than those that stand out. It is unwise, however, to overdo the blending to the extent that ads are indistinguishable from your site’s content – readers who feel fooled will not return to your site.
Make sure links into your website are from relevant pages that contain similar or linked material. This means that readers arriving at your site will be genuinely interested in your site’s contents and therefore will be genuinely interested in the advertisements on offer.
It is important to experiment with the format of advertisements. The way forward is to vary the format over several days and then compare the CTR pertaining to each.
Finally, always stay within the Adsense Terms of Service. Happy Adsensing!
