iWeb Ploughs $3 Million into New 20,000 Web Server Farm

The $3 million first phase of a new iWeb data center built from scratch to house 20,000 web and email servers has started in Montreal, Canada.

The data center is the company’s fourth facility and will give a total shared hosting, dedicated hosting, managed hosting and collocated enterprise hosting capacity of 35,000 servers when completed.

The server farm is spread across four facilities in Montreal cross-connected by 10GbE links and 76GBps internet connectivity to the backbone.

“The new center will be built to accommodate our automation needs, which is one of our 2010 priorities, said Cyrille Mertès, chief technical officer (CTO). “Since it’s a new data center, we can plan from the beginning according to our current criteria and standards, with a minimum of technological compromise.”

Phase 1 will set up the 31,000 square feet building for installation of the first 3,000 servers by April 2010.

iWeb is keeping an online diary of technical information, images and videos of the data center construction that can be accessed from Facebook or Twitter http://twitter.com/iweb. Some pictures are already posted on iWeb’s Flickrand Facebook http://www.facebook.com/iWebTechnologies accounts.
