Selecting the Right Web Hosting Company

Choosing a web hosting company may seem like an easy enough process. You compare all the features and choose the one that’s the cheapest, right? All though we’re all naturally inclined to look for the cheapest things, choosing a web hosting company is not a situation where this principle should be used.

When it comes to choosing a web host, there are many things that you’ll need to consider before making your final choice and price should definitely not be the first consideration. Remember the saying, “You get what you pay for?” This saying really is true so look for the important criteria.

Storage Space and Bandwidth – The most important feature of a web hosting company is capacity. Do they have the power (bandwidth and server power) to not only carry your load but do it efficiently? You can get the cheapest web host and find that when you need them the most, they can’t provide. Most hosts have hundreds of servers and need to be able to efficiently provide for all of them. Ask the company what their available capacity is in numbers.

Reliability – Learn all you can about the reliability of this host. They may claim that they have a lot of power and capacity but do they also have a lot of outages? Speak to as many people as you can about their reliability. Do your research online as well. Ask the company about their up time. The time is different all over the world. While you’re sleeping, someone around the world may be trying to access your site. Can they keep it up and running efficiently day and night?

Technical Support – Find out what they do in the case of a failure and how quickly they’ll have you up and running smoothly. Is their customer support always available to help you? Good customer support is extremely valuable. In order to cut down on expenses, a lot of web hosting companies rely on support staff outsourced overseas. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, chances are you’ll get a better support if the company has its own local support center. Things you want to look for are 24×7 support, phone support and a toll free number.

Security – Don’t ever underestimate the importance of good security. With the high rate of spam and viruses, you need to know that you’re always protected. Downtimes mean money loss and you don’t want that.
